My father rescued a dog abandoned on a marsh while gunning back in 1938. He fed him and brought him back with him to the boat, the Helen G, docked in Brielle, where he worked as a First Mate. He was able to locate the owner and "Buck" was reunited with his family in North Jersey where he had been stolen weeks before.
Years later, on a small island in the South Pacific, Imperial Marines had broken through in the middle of the night while my father and the 77th Division slept. Gene Hendricks woke up to the sound of Buck barking, as clear as if he were right beside him. As he opened his eyes, he caught sight of the enemy, took out his pistol and lived to tell the tale of how he had saved a dog's life who in turn had saved his.
